What The Bad Breath Forum Didn't Teach You
A bad breath forum is an excellent source of information and there are hundreds to choose from on the Internet. However, the only problem with using a resource like this to learn about the various bad breath solutions is that they are often sponsored by companies selling products like mouth wash, toothpaste, and a host of similar products that simply may not address the underlying issue causing the problem. However, for general bad breath help, such resources are a good place to start.
In most cases, the advice offered by such a forum is centered around issues and questions involving the number one cause of bad breath: oral bacteria. In particular, the answers and products will cater to people trying to eliminate oral bacteria from the back of their time where bad breath research indicates the majority of problems originate regarding halitosis. However, not all such resources will take the time to inform you about the number two cause of bad breath: periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease begins as gingivitis and it, like bad breath, is caused by anaerobic bacteria. However, unlike the bad breath caused by bacteria living on the back of the tongue and producing the sulfur compounds that cause bad breath, the anaerobic bacteria responsible for periodontal disease cause an infection in the gum tissue. However, bad breath problems caused by these anaerobic bacteria will continue to intensify as your oral health continues to deteriorate. In time, this cause of bad breath could ultimately increase your likelihood of developing a host of very serious medical problems, including:
- Infective Endocarditis—and infection in your heart caused by the same anaerobic bacteria responsible for gum disease and bad breath. In time, the infection will lead to growths in the chambers that can break off and travel through your bloodstream until they become lodged in some other part of the body. If these growths travel to your brain, they can increase the likelihood of stroke.
- Coronary artery disease—Numerous studies have conclusively demonstrated that there is a significant risk of developing coronary artery disease if you have periodontal disease. The bacteria that were a nuisance and causing bad breath in the oral cavity along with the degeneration of oral health will eventually spread to other areas of the body. They are believed to attach to fatty plaques in the arteries and further obstruct blood flow and thus increase chances for heart attack.
While gum disease is only the second leading cause of bad breath problems, it is by far the more serious. As with most medical problems, periodontal disease has a number of additional symptoms aside from bad breath that can help you to identify it when present, including:
- Inflammation of gum tissue
- Bleeding when brushing or consuming hard foods
- Gums are sore when touched
If your halitosis is accompanied by any of the symptoms listed above, be sure that the bad breath forum you consult also has information on periodontal disease because the cost of not addressing this problem is too high to ignore.
