What If Bad Breath Treatments Fail?
If you look on the shelves of any pharmacy, there are a lot of bad breath treatments to choose from and most have some antiseptic quality. This is no coincidence because the most common cause of bad breath is oral bacteria. These microorganisms have been in your mouth since the day you were born and they will be there the day you die. In other words, don’t believe any product claiming to be a chronic bad breath cure because no such thing really exists. That being the case, what does one do when halitosis is threatening relationships and perhaps even our job?
The inside of your mouth is a delicate balancing act between hundreds of varieties of bacteria. While there are many strains of bacteria, there are two basic varieties:
- Anaerobic bacteria—this type of microbe reproduces fastest in places where there is little to no oxygen present. Plaque is that sticky film that forms on teeth and soft tissue in the mouth and anaerobic bacteria love to live behind this protective layer because it is a low-oxygen environment.
- Aerobic bacteria—these are essentially the “good bacteria” because they battle with the anaerobic variety for space in your mouth. When there are more aerobic bacteria in the mouth, bad breath problems are unlikely and the oral cavity is healthy. However, when the anaerobic population begins to explode, infection and bad breath are likely.
The anaerobic bacteria are ultimately the cause of bad breath and they tend to prefer living at the back of the tongue and other soft tissue (or in between the teeth) and feeding on the food particles that get stuck in the mouth. Then, the bacteria secrete waste products known as sulfur compounds, such as:
- Hydrogen Sulfide
- Methyl Mercapatan
- Dimethyl Sulfide
Other by-products of bacteria associated with bad breath symptoms are:
- Cadaverine
- Putrecine
- Skatole
These bacteria by-products are the ultimate sources of odor and what we are actually smelling when we test for bad breath by exhaling into a cupped hand. Because these bacteria typically gather and combine with the plaque at the back of the tongue, you may need to consult with a dentist to eliminate them completely. A tongue scraping procedure will be necessary because simply brushing this area will not be enough to remove all the plaque and bacteria. Then, by practicing good oral hygiene and taking care to brush after meals, you should be able to prevent bad breath problems from returning because the balance between the two varieties of bacteria should be maintained after the procedure.
However, if you decide to brush the tongue hard enough, you may be able to remove all of these microbes. If this fails to end the bad breath problem then you may also have a large anaerobic bacteria population living along the gum line and causing periodontal disease. When typical bad breath treatments fail, this is a likely cause of the halitosis and you should see a dentist immediately because periodontal disease can lead to a number of big problems down the road, such as:
- Heart Disease
- Stroke
- Infective Endocarditis
