You REALLY Don’t Want A Periodontal Disease Treatment!!

Periodontal disease treatment doesn’t even sound good-does it? However, periodontal problems are really just another way of saying gum disease. At one time or another, it is very possible that we have experienced gingivitis because it is one of the more common dental problems. Few of us take gingivitis very seriously because the worst symptom tends to be bleeding gums when we are brushing our teeth or eating hard foods. The bleeding does not last long and there is typically no pain involved-but this mild symptom is a precursor to advanced periodontal disease.

If you have a hardened layer of yellow substance on your teeth, then tartar has already formed on your teeth and it is almost certain that you already have gingivitis. Unfortunately, common dental health products cannot remove tartar. However, it is vital that you go to the dentist for a teeth cleaning to remove this hardened layer because it helps the bacteria responsible for causing gingivitis and severe periodontal disease.

Anaerobic bacteria are always present in your mouth and they aid in the formation of plaque-you know, that stuff all those dental health products claim to help remove. Well, you need to remove this plaque that forms on your teeth because if you don’t-it will harden and become tartar.

Saliva helps control the anaerobic bacteria population in your mouth because it is rich in oxygen (anaerobic bacteria do not breed in well-oxygenated environments) and has enzymes that help form antibodies. These antibodies help neutralize the anaerobic bacteria which is why saliva is so vital in the prevention of gingivitis and advanced periodontal disease. However, saliva cannot penetrate behind tartar and that is why the bacteria reproduce quicker. Remember, tartar cannot be completely removed by standard dental health products-it must be scraped away during a teeth cleaning procedure.

Common dental problems may begin innocently enough-as is the case with gingivitis-but they do not go away on their own. The anaerobic bacteria cause an infection in the gums during gingivitis and that is essentially all gum disease really is-an infection. With gingivitis, this infection is contained in the gums and only causes mild symptoms-such as bleeding.

However, if the infection spreads below the gum line, then you are then faced with severe periodontal disease-periodontitis. At that point, the infection will center around the supporting gingival and bone tissue that helps keep your teeth in place. When advanced periodontal disease reaches this point, the toxins produced by the infection dissolve the supporting tissues, cause teeth to loosen, and eventually fall out. In order to prevent this from happening, periodontal disease treatment will be necessary and some of the most common SURGICAL procedures include:

  • Pocket Reduction
  • Crown Lengthening
  • Regeneration
  • Soft Tissue Graft

Anyone who has undergone one of these procedures typically wishes that they were back in preschool and dental health was perfect again. This is because all of these treatment options for severe periodontal disease are painful, tend to involve multiple visits, and require a lot of money. In order to avoid periodontal disease treatment, simply practice good oral hygiene using dental health products that help remove plaque and be sure to have your teeth cleaned every six months to remove plaque.
