Not Knowing How To Prevent Gingivitis Will Cost You
Between your teeth falling completely out of your mouth to the increased chances for major medical problems down the road, the price for not knowing how to prevent gingivitis can be very high indeed. Because gum disease and gingivitis problems are caused by bacteria that produce an infection which begins in your gingival tissue, the problem cannot be prevented or treated unless these harmful microbes are destroyed. However, mild gum disease or gingivitis is only the beginning of problems where the harmful bacteria are concerned. A few of the problems that can arise out of a simple case of gingivitis include:
- Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (also known as trench mouth)
- Aggressive Periodontitis
- Chronic Periodontitis
- Tooth loss
- Chronic Halitosis
- Weakened Immune System and increased likelihood for developing minor conditions such as colds or perhaps the flu
Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis
You really don't want your gingivitis treatment to fail because this can be a particularly painful and embarrassing version of the disease. Some of the most notable characteristics of necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis include:
- Lesions on gums that many call "mouth sores"
- Gums begin bleeding during most meals and especially during brushing or flossing
- Gums will be very sore when touched and it may be painful when eating certain foods
- A gray film may form over the gums which is impossible to remove without proper gingivitis or periodontitis treatment
- Mild fever may persist for days or even weeks
- Bad case of bad breath that no mouth wash or breath mint can hide
Aggressive Periodontitis
If the gum disease treatment fails then the infection will spread below the gum line and oral health will really begin to deteriorate rapidly. With aggressive gum disease or gingivitis, the gingival and supporting bone tissue are dissolved very quickly in this aggressive form of periodontitis. You will notice that your teeth seem longer because the gums are being annihilated by the problems with periodontal health. A soft tissue graft may in fact be the best option when considering advanced gingivitis or periodontitis treatment.
Chronic Periodontitis
This is actually the most common form of advanced periodontal disease and is characterized by the formation of pockets in between the gums and teeth. Gums and teeth degenerate slower than with aggressive ulcerative gingivitis or periodontitis, but the pockets tend to cause problems to progress faster because the bacteria breed faster in them. A pocket reduction procedure is often the best form of gingivitis treatment once these cavities form in the mouth.
Tooth loss, chronic halitosis, and a weakened immune system are all added little benefits found when gingivitis and periodontitis are not taken seriously and allowed to continue to degenerate dental health. Simple good oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing daily combined with the use of an all natural mouthwash is generally enough to prevent gingivitis treatment from becoming necessary. However, in addition to knowing how to prevent gingivitis through good oral hygiene, it is important to also see your dentist every six months for a cleaning and check-up so that any problems can be addressed before they require a chronic gingivitis remedy.
