Bad Habits Often Cause Gum Disease
At the end of the day, anaerobic bacteria (which are always present in the human mouth no matter how great your oral hygiene regimen!) actually cause gum disease. While bad habits are not always responsible for helping these harmful bacteria breed to the point of causing periodontal gum disease problems, they are the most likely suspects. To be fair, however, there are other factors that can cause gum disease problems, such as:
1. Genetics-there is a gene that predispositions certain people to periodontal gum disease and people with this gene are twice as likely as a smoker to have gum disease (smokers are 3X's more likely to have gum disease than non-smokers)
2. Other Medical Problems-Diabetes, HIV, Leukemia-all of these medical conditions are known to cause gum disease and there is little that can be done about the condition except to control the bacteria with antibiotics, proper hydration, and excellent oral hygiene
3. Stress-This may be considered a bad habit in some cases, but the fact remains that stress weakens the immune system, increases blood pressure, and causes the body to use water faster thus making gum disease prevention difficult
As for the bad habits-there are several that increase the odds of periodontal gum disease and they either dehydrate the body or weaken the immune system, including:
- Drinking Alcohol
- Smoking
- Using Stimulants
- Vigorous exercise
- Talking Excessively (public speaking)
- Poor Oral Hygiene
Although your mouth is always filled with both beneficial and harmful bacteria, the body can prevent most gum disease problems from ever starting with saliva. Anaerobic bacteria do not do so very well in well-oxygenated environments. Part of the reason that saliva helps with gum disease prevention is because it is rich in oxygen and thus makes it difficult for the bacteria to breed. Saliva also helps prevent gum disease because it also is loaded with enzymes that help produce antibodies that destroy the harmful bacteria.
By engaging in behaviors or consuming things that help induce dehydration, the body cannot prevent gum disease effectively because salivation levels decrease rapidly when the body is not properly hydrated. For behaviors such as smoking or the use of stimulants, the damage is even more severe. When smoking or using stimulants, preventing gum disease is almost impossible because these behaviors not only cause dehydration and lowered salivation rates-they also weaken the immune system and leave the body even more vulnerable to harmful anaerobic bacteria.
Periodontal gum disease is a degenerative disorder that causes more problems as time goes on. If the anaerobic bacteria make it below your gum line, then advanced gum disease treatment such as pocket reduction surgery or regeneration become necessary. However, most gum disease and periodontal problems can be avoided by practicing good oral hygiene habits and staying clear of substances that cause dehydration, a weakened immune system, or both. The truth is that our bad habits generally cause gum disease problems and we can therefore prevent the condition by making simple adjustments to our behaviors and consumption habits.
