As bluntly as it can be stated, the failure to cure gum disease may cause a host of problems that can seriously jeopardize your long term health, including:
- Cause teeth to loosen and eventually fall out
- Increased odds for Coronary Artery Disease
- Increased odds for stroke
- Infective Endocarditis
Gum disease prevention is complicated by the fact that your mouth is always filled with both beneficial and harmful bacteria. The beneficial bacteria are aerobic in nature meaning they thrive in oxygenated environments. Anaerobic bacteria (the harmful variety), do not breed very well in oxygenated systems and this is the variety that will necessitate gum disease treatment if you do not brush and floss regularly.
The anaerobic bacteria may cause a number of health related problems but this is especially true with periodontal gum disease. These harmful microbes are attracted to the thin layer of film which will become plaque. This thin layer is known as pellicle but it will become plaque once it has been invaded by anaerobic bacteria. Gum disease prevention is a constant struggle because the anaerobic bacteria will attach to this thin layer of pellicle within a few short hours even after brushing or using mouth wash.
Plaque hardens into tartar and it cannot be removed with normal oral hygiene. Once tartar is present in your mouth, gum disease prevention has failed and you have a mild form of the condition known as gingivitis. The actual symptoms of gingivitis tend to be very mild and include:
- Gums may bleed when brushing, flossing, or eating hard foods such as apples or corn-on-the-cob
- Gingival tissue is sensitive to the touch and may even be painful
- The appearance of halitosis that does not seem to go away even after brushing
- Red or inflamed gums
Gingivitis only affects the gums but the bacteria may spread below the gum line where they may destroy gingival and bone tissue. It is important to treat gum disease in its mild stage of gingivitis because treatment options become very expensive and painful when the bacteria spread below the gum line. It is common for pockets to form in between the gums and teeth. These pockets form due to the gap left when the toxins dissolved the gingival and bone tissue. If these pockets are not eliminated with advanced gum disease treatment, the teeth will loosen and eventually fall out when all of the supporting bone tissue has been destroyed. After the teeth begin to fall out, the bacteria typically spread beyond the oral cavity where they will cause bigger problems than periodontal gum disease.
The anaerobic bacteria that cause gum problems have been connected to heart disease, gastric ulcers, stroke, infective endocarditis, and sinusitis. In fact, coronary artery disease is twice as likely for people with periodontal gum disease and the weakening of the immune system means that even common ailments such as colds and flu strains are more likely. When you fail to cure gum disease problems before they spread below the gum line, treatment options become expensive and other health issues are that much more likely to occur.
