When Gum Disease and Tooth Problems Go Bad
One of the last things any of us wants to spend time worrying about is gum disease tooth problems. While many of us take the time to practice good oral hygiene, our oral health is always imperiled by nearly two dozen different types of anaerobic bacteria. Normally, human saliva is the body's natural means of preventing gum disease because it helps neutralize the anaerobic bacteria that are responsible for causing the condition. When you are having problems salivating due to dehydration or some other factor, the bacteria will breed faster and an infection may begin in your gingival tissue. At this point, gum disease prevention has failed and gingivitis has now set in. There are a number of periodontal diseases that can manifest in your mouth, including:
- Gingivitis
- Aggressive Periodontitis
- Chronic Periodontitis
- Periodontitis As A Manifestation Of A Systematic Disease
Gingivitis does indeed occur when gum disease prevention has failed but it is a relatively mild form of gum disease and is typified by:
- Reddened and inflamed gingival tissue
- Pain or sensitivity when touching gingival tissue
- Bleeding during brushing or when the eating hard foods
- Minor but chronic halitosis begins to be noticeable
In general, gum disease treatments for this minor form of periodontal disease tend to be limited to a teeth cleaning. The dentist will need to remove any tartar with a thorough scraping as this is a favorite hiding spot for anaerobic bacteria and normal oral hygiene cannot penetrate behind this ossified layer.
Aggressive periodontitis occurs if and when the anaerobic bacteria spread below the gum line where they can then cause a number of health related problems and making gum disease treatment very complicated. Aggressive periodontitis is characterized by a very rapid degeneration of your bone and gingival tissue. One of the more obvious signs of this condition is that more of your teeth become visible because the gingival tissue is being destroyed by the gum disease. When aggressive periodontitis is present, it is very possible that gum disease treatment will involve surgery.
Chronic periodontitis is actually the most common form of advanced periodontal gum disease. This particular condition is characterized by a slower rate of bone and gingival degeneration than found with aggressive periodontitis. Gum disease treatment is complicated when dealing with chronic periodontitis because pockets form in between the gum tissue and supporting bone structures. These pockets must be cleansed of bacteria and then the gums must be reattached to the bone.
Periodontitis As a Manifestation of a Systematic Disease is another chronic version of gum disease. Unfortunately, gum disease treatment is limited with this variety because the original medical problem causing the oral health issues must first be addressed. Diabetes is a common cause of gum disease because it often causes dehydration and dry mouth. Because salivation rates are lowered by improper hydration, the anaerobic bacteria populations that create gum disease tooth problems will breed excessively making the problem difficult to control.
