Problems With Halitosis And Medications
One of the biggest problems with halitosis and medications made to prevent the problem is that the underlying issue is rarely addressed. Far too often, people take mints and candies made for masking bad breath problems rather than treating them. Even more dangerous is not realizing how proper halitosis treatment can help you avoid far larger health problems in the future. The very reason why bad breath problems are so serious and why treatment should be taken equally seriously is because of anaerobic bacteria.
The harmful bacteria in the human mouth form what are known as Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC's) and these substances are the root cause of the halitosis. In addition to causing bad breath problems, there are a number of medical issues caused by the bacteria in our mouths, including:
- Increased Risk of Stroke
- Increased Risk of Coronary Heart Disease
- Infective Endocarditis
- Weakened Immune System
The anaerobic bacteria are always present in our mouth but they are relatively harmless unless their numbers swell due to tooth decay or even gum disease. In either case, it will be necessary to consult with a dentist or periodontist to either treat the rotten tooth or gum disease at the heart of the halitosis problem. In many cases, an antimicrobial treatment will be required to knock down the bacteria population especially where advanced periodontal problems such as receding gums are already present.
In cases where gum disease or tooth decay are not the source of the bad breath problem, a larger medical issue may be at the source of the trouble. Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by blood sugar abnormalities caused by problems with pancreas regulating insulin levels within the body. A common symptom associated with diabetes is dehydration which can lead to dry mouth.
In a dry mouth, there is not enough saliva present to naturally regulate the anaerobic bacteria levels. While periodontal disease or tooth decay may not be causing the bad breath problem, bacteria populations will still swell and produce the VSC's responsible for halitosis. While diabetes may not be the cause of the dry mouth, there are a number of other factors that may lead to the condition, including:
- Use of Stimulants
- Consumption of Alcohol
- Diet High in Protein and Fats
- Excessive Exercise
- Dehydration
- Prescription Medications, such as anti-depressants, pain killers, and even high blood pressure pills
Finally, it is possible for the halitosis to be caused by acidic blood pH levels. Low-carb diets are a common cause of acidic blood chemistry because they tend to induce ketosis which is what happens when the body begins to burn fat stores in order to secure its energy needs. Once the state of ketosis has ended or subsided, blood pH will return to normal and the bad breath problems should also disappear. When the blood chemistry is not causing problems, halitosis and medications to solve the problem will concentrate on reducing anaerobic bacteria populations and the VSC's they produce.
OraMD® is an all-natural halitosis product made from the essential oils of almond, spearmint, and peppermint. OraMD® offers a long-term solution for bad breath and halitosis by cleaning the mouth and killing the bacteria that causes these volatile sulfur compounds (VSC's). This simple act stops halitosis, gum disease, and gingivitis from even forming.
