Why Most Breath Mints Fail To Cure Halitosis
Have you been trying to cure halitosis problems for months-or even years-but with little to no success? A large part of the failure may be due to using gimmicks like "bad breath" mints, drops, films, etc. Most bad breath products do little to nothing about the underlying cause of the problem and instead try to mask odor. Now any mint, gum, or similar product that stimulates the production of saliva will help with bad breath problems but the sad truth is that most are unaware of this fact. That is why people tend to focus on the flavor of a bad breath mint instead of the ingredients and this is why chronic halitosis problems are rarely treated and persist for many years.
The truth is that most bad breath problems are due to poor oral hygiene-period. Morning breath is not something that you are born with-it is something that gets worse with time. The cause of morning breath and the majority of halitosis problems is bacteria. When each of us awakens, there is generally a thin, slick film that covers our teeth. This film is known as pellicle.
Harmful bacteria are attracted to the pellicle for one simple reason: Because the oxygen and enzymes present in saliva kill off anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria, the pellicle offers a safe place for the harmful organisms to multiply. If the film is not removed with brushing and normal oral hygiene, it will harden and become tartar. Once tartar forms, bad breath problems will only worsen because gum disease is already present. Gum disease causes chronic halitosis because of the bacteria causing the condition and as a result of the toxins produced by the infection of the gingival tissue.
Halitosis is bad breath-period. Some people believe halitosis is caused by a medical problem such as gum disease while bad breath is more the result of our food choices-and thus transitory and a separate condition from halitosis. However, they are one in the same. Bacteria is the cause of the problem unless there have been basic alterations to the blood chemistry due to major shifts in dietary habits. There are contributing factors that may lead to an increase in anaerobic bacteria levels in the mouth and thus causing more severe halitosis, such as:
- Dehydration
- Alcohol/Caffeine Consumption
- Smoking
- Public or Excessive Talking
- Using Mouthwash Products That Cause Dehydration
Bad breath mints and other oral agents that encourage salivation will help with chronic halitosis issues if they are caused by a dry mouth. However, these agents will be very ineffective if the bad breath is being caused by:
- Excess Levels of Tartar
- Gum Disease/Advanced Periodontal Disease
- Impacted Tooth
- Abscessed Tooth
Most breath mints fail to cure halitosis problems because even in the case of dry mouth, the underlying problem is bacteria. To cure halitosis problems, breath mints would need to be made with natural antiseptic properties.
