What Halitosis Cure-I've Had Bad Breath Problems Forever!!

You might be tempted to think that a halitosis cure is impossible because bad breath problems have been a part of your life since you can remember. In the majority of cases, halitosis treatment is possible because the underlying problem is typically anaerobic bacteria caused by periodontal disease or rotten teeth. Bacteria produce substances known as Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC's) and these substances are responsible for the chronic bad breath millions of people suffer from. In many cases, the halitosis is caused by gum disease (periodontal disease) and will typically go away after a good teeth cleaning by your dentist.

Periodontal disease is actually an infection caused by the same bacteria that also form the VSC's responsible for bad breath problems. The bacteria hide beneath a thin, invisible film that forms on our teeth throughout the day and night-known as pellicle. After the bacteria attach to the pellicle, plaque begins to form and it is made every day of our lives-no matter how much we brush. The bad breath we awaken with each morning is often caused by plaque and that is why it disappears after a thorough brushing.

If we fail to brush away the plaque in the morning, then not only does the bad breath linger throughout the day-tartar will form. After plaque hardens into tartar, we will develop a minor form of chronic halitosis because normal brushing will not be able to remove the bacteria hiding behind the tartar. This is precisely why our chronic bad breath problems seem to disappear after we have our teeth cleaned by the dentist. It is tartar that your dentist is scraping away from the teeth-and removing the bacteria that are causing your halitosis problem.

Should advanced periodontal disease begin to form and the bacteria spread below your gum line, then chronic halitosis problems will be in your future until the problem is treated by a peridontist. At that point, pockets will begin to form between your teeth and the gingival tissue. In these pockets, bacteria populations will swell and the halitosis problem will grow more severe as a result.

However, it is possible for you to have chronic halitosis problems for years and years without advanced periodontal disease ever developing. In such cases, dry mouth is often the cause of the bad breath problem. When the mouth has plenty of saliva, halitosis is generally not an issue. Saliva has plenty of oxygen and enzymes to control anaerobic bacterial populations. People who have chronic dry mouth issues will tend to have more acute halitosis and medications tend to make the problem worse because many cause dehydration-and hence the cycle continues. When periodontal disease and tooth decay are not issues, the best halitosis cure will often be avoiding dry mouth by ceasing any of the following contributing factors to dry mouth:

  • Drinking Alcohol
  • Consuming Caffeinated Products
  • Public Speaking/Prolonged Shouting
  • Abusing/Overusing Laxatives
  • Excessive Exercise Regimen
  • Diuretic Dietary Habits
  • Prescription Medicines
