Advanced Periodontal Disease Health Risks
A silent but effective destroyer of oral health is periodontal disease, or gum disease. There are several periodontal diseases and the one that most people are familiar with is gingivitis. Rarely a painful condition, the symptoms of gingivitis include inflamed and red gums that may bleed rather easily when touched. Most people with gingivitis notice this form of periodontal disease when they are brushing their teeth or eating something hard like a pear. However, at more advanced stages such as chronic periodontitis, the condition becomes a serious health risk.
At the heart of any mild or advanced periodontal disease is an infection in your mouth caused by harmful bacteria. These bacteria are constantly being produced by your body so there is no way of really preventing them from reaching your mouth. The harmful bacteria produce toxins that your body's immune system must constantly wage war with in order to keep you healthy. It is the toxins that cause gingivitis and advanced periodontal disease.
Gingivitis mainly affects the gums above the gum line. When the bacteria spread below the gum line, an advanced periodontal disease known as periodontitis takes hold. The toxins produced by the bacteria literally cause the flesh and even bone to decay and rot away. As this process unfolds, the teeth will start to loosen. This is because the bacteria create little pockets in between the gums and teeth (in spaces that have been destroyed already by the toxins). The pockets become new sites of rapid bacteria production and the process speeds up. Given enough time, advanced periodontal disease will literally cause a person's teeth to fall out.
Although the loss of one's teeth due to advanced periodontal disease can create certain health issues in and of itself, this is not the greatest concern. The truth is that the teeth may not be the last victims of gum disease because it also has the potential to spread to the jaw bone. Just as the toxins caused the gums and teeth to dissolve, they will also cause the disintegration of the jaw bone itself. Further than this, the toxins could spread from the mouth to the heart. Learn more about the heart and periodontal disease.
But perhaps the greatest health risk of advanced periodontal disease is the infection itself. The immune system can handle a great many diseases and foreign agents but it begins to wear down when fighting prolonged infections such as periodontal disease. In time, the weakened immune system may become so overtaxed that it cannot ward off common infections and viruses. What may have started as a cold can turn into pneumonia when the immune system is weakened. Truly, this is the biggest threat posed by advanced periodontal disease.
But all of the negative consequences posed by advanced periodontal disease can be avoided with good oral hygiene and some anti-bacterial product such as mouthwash. Just be certain that the mouthwash is made from all natural ingredients because products made with alcohol and other chemicals can cause dry mouth. Any agent that dries the mouth out is harmful because it removes one of the body's natural defense against bacteria-saliva.
