Where Does Periodontal Disease Come From?
Even the sound of periodontal disease is enough to send chills up the spine. But, if you were to ask someone suffering from the condition, they would probably tell you that it really didn't hurt or cause serious discomfort. This is because periodontal disease is really just an advanced stage of gum disease. However, almost all of us were told to brush our teeth at least twice daily and floss regularly. A big part of the reason why so many people fail to take gum disease seriously is because-well, we were just never told to do so. But, if people knew that all of those years of brushing and flossing could be undone and their teeth could fall out because of a problem with the gums like periodontal disease, chances are that it would be taken far more seriously. In order to know how to prevent periodontal disease, we first must understand what causes it.
The Root Cause of Periodontal Disease
Simply stated, periodontal disease is caused by harmful bacteria living in your mouth. Now we have all been told to wash our hands before we eat but truthfully-this won't make the slightest difference where the harmful bacteria in your mouth are concerned. This is because those harmful bacteria are actually created within our bodies so it won't make a difference how often you wash your hands before you eat or how clean you keep your toothbrush.
The harmful bacteria in our mouth cause the formation of plaque. That slippery but very noticeable film on our teeth is plaque. Now if we brush properly every day and make certain to floss, plaque never becomes a problem because it is easily removed. However, allow the plaque to remain on your teeth and it will harden into tartar. And tartar, is where the problems with gums begin.
Periodontal disease comes in two primary forms: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease and it occurs when the harmful bacteria in your mouth start multiplying rapidly behind the tartar that has formed on your teeth and at the gum line. The bacteria produce toxins and they cause the gums to redden, become swollen, and perhaps even bleed when brushing. However, gingivitis is not really painful and it does not cause serious damage to your teeth. Left untreated, however, and gingivitis will evolve into a more serious form of periodontal disease known as periodontitis.
Periodontitis occurs when the bacteria begin spreading from the gums to the roots of your teeth. This happens in periodontal disease because the toxins actually cause the gums and teeth to rot away. The further down the bacteria spread, the more serious the consequences will be. In extreme cases, periodontal disease will cause the teeth to separate from the gums and perhaps even fall out. In truly horrible cases, periodontal disease can spread to the jawbone itself and begin dissolving it. And if you smoke, smoking and periodontal disease are directly related.
So, if you want to avoid the nasty consequences of periodontal disease, you must keep the bacteria at bay while taking care to remove all plaque with good oral hygiene. Using a mouthwash is an excellent way to combat the harmful bacteria in your mouth. Just be sure that it has all natural ingredients because mouth washes that use alcohol to kill the bacteria will dry your mouth out. This may worsen your odds for periodontal disease as the saliva naturally combats the harmful bacteria in our mouths.
